5 Essential Oils to Start With: Simple Practices for Busy Moms
No overwhelm, no big collection just five simple oils that fit right into your morning coffee, your workday reset, and your wind-down at night.
Getting started with essential oils can feel a little overwhelming. There are so many options, so how do you know which ones you actually need?
Essential oils have been part of my life for almost 10 years, and I’ve been working with them for seven years. As a coach and essential oil expert, I love helping busy women and moms find simple ways to support their emotional well-being and incorporate essential oils into everyday life.
And the good news is, you don’t need a huge collection to get started. Here are five of my favourite oils and some simple ways you can use them.
Here are five I would start with.
1. Lemon — Focus & Energy
Lemon is one of the easiest oils to incorporate into your morning, especially when you need more energy or focus. One of my favourite practices is very simple: put one drop into your palms, rub them together and take a few deep breaths. I love doing this in the morning or before sitting down to work.
When I really need to focus, I combine one drop of Lemon + one drop of Peppermint and inhale them together. You can also put both into your diffuser while you’re working.
It takes less than a minute, which is exactly why I love it.
2. Peppermint — Head Tension, Energy & Breathing
Peppermint is probably one of the most useful oils to have at home. For occasional head tension, I like to dilute and apply a small amount around my temples and the back of my neck. Its fresh minty aroma is also one I reach for when I want to feel like I’m breathing more freely. You can inhale it from your palms or use it in your diffuser, especially during the colder season.
And for those mornings when you’re really tired, Peppermint + Lemon is still one of my favourite combinations.
3. Citrus Bliss — Mood & Gloomy Days
If you live in Vancouver, you probably understand why this one is on my list! Citrus Bliss is my go-to when the weather is grey and gloomy and I want to make my space feel brighter. It has this beautiful, sweet citrus smell that almost reminds me of a treat.
Diffuse a few drops while you’re getting ready, working, cooking or just spending time at home. If you don’t have a diffuser nearby, put a drop in your palms and inhale.
4. Lavender — Sleep & Evening Routine
Lavender is one of my favourite oils for slowing down in the evening and preparing for sleep.
You can add a few drops to your diffuser about 20–30 minutes before going to bed, apply appropriately diluted Lavender to your feet, or use it for a relaxing evening massage.
Another practice I love is adding a few drops to bath salts and taking a warm bath before bed. You can also use a small amount on your pillow or bedding.
You definitely don’t need to do all of these. Pick one little practice that fits naturally into your evening.
5. Balance — Grounding & Busy Days
Balance is one of my absolute favourites, and it’s also one of the blends my clients use a lot.
My favourite way to use it is to apply it to my feet in the morning. It takes seconds and becomes a little grounding ritual before the day starts.
During a busy or stressful day, I also like applying it around my neck and shoulders, inhaling it while taking a few slow breaths, or diffusing it beside my workspace.
You can also bring it into your evening routine. I love that it’s one bottle I can reach for at different moments throughout the whole day.
Keep It Simple
This is probably the biggest thing I want you to take from this list: essential oils don’t have to become another thing you need to find time for.
Diffuse Lemon + Peppermint while you’re already working. Put Balance on your feet while you’re getting ready. Add Lavender to your evening routine.
Small practices are usually the ones we can actually stay consistent with.
Essential oils are concentrated, and the right way to use them can be different for children, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and for individual needs. Always follow the product directions and appropriate dilution guidance. If you’re unsure, please ask me. I’ve been working with essential oils for seven years, and I’m always happy to help you find options and practices that are appropriate for your individual situation.
For me, the quality of the oils is extremely important. I use doTERRA essential oils, which follow the CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade® testing process. Every batch goes through different types of testing to check its purity and consistency and to make sure there are no added fillers or synthetic ingredients. This is one of the main reasons I’ve trusted and used these oils for so many years.
