Family Leadership Begins with Small Everyday Moments

The most powerful leadership lesson you’ll ever teach won’t happen in a boardroom. It’ll happen at dinner tonight, with one question.

Family Leadership Begins with Small Everyday Moments

I was twenty, standing at the front of a classroom, teaching French.

There was a moment I kept seeing, again and again. A student who had decided long ago that they were “bad at languages” would suddenly get it. A sentence would land. Their face would change. And for a second, you could see them meet a version of themselves they didn’t know existed.

Nothing about that student had changed. Only the way they saw themselves.

I didn’t have a name for it then. I just knew I never wanted to forget it.

The long way around

Life took me far from that classroom. An MBA. Years in business strategy and marketing. Then the biggest leap of all: leaving everything familiar and starting over in Canada.

Anyone who has immigrated knows that feeling. You become a beginner again. New language, new rules, new everything. You learn very quickly that confidence is not something you either have or don’t have. It is something you build, one small brave step at a time.

At the time, these felt like separate chapters. I didn’t yet see the thread connecting them.

The brain that changed

Then I became a mother.

Nobody warned me how much motherhood would change my own mind. My attention, my emotions, my memory, the way I reacted to the world. I felt like I was meeting a new version of myself, and I wanted to understand her.

That curiosity led me to neuroscience, and I went on to earn certifications through MIT and Harvard. There, I finally found the words for what I had seen in that classroom at twenty.

The brain is not fixed. It keeps changing throughout our lives, shaped by what we practice, again and again.

That idea changed how I saw everything, especially parenting.

Where leadership really begins

When we hear the word “leadership,” we picture boardrooms and stages.

I picture a kitchen table on a school night.

A child is stuck. Maybe it’s homework. Maybe it’s a friendship. Maybe it’s a feeling too big to name. And a parent has a choice. Fix it quickly and move on. Or pause, ask one question, and let the child find the next step.

That pause is family leadership.

It isn’t about being a perfect parent. It’s about how we show up in the ordinary moments: the car ride, the bedtime chat, the mistake we admit out loud. Children learn far more from what we practice with them than from what we tell them.

And here is the part that surprised me most. When we lead this way, we grow too. Our children are not the only ones whose brains are changing.

Growing together

My own children became my greatest teachers. One is always asking questions. The other is always ready to try something new. Watching them, I saw two halves of a growing mind: reflection and courage. Knowing yourself, and stretching yourself.

That is what I want for every child. And for every parent.

It’s why I founded Future Minds Club, to help families turn small, everyday moments into a lifetime of curiosity, confidence, and kindness.

But you don’t need anything special to begin.

Tonight, at dinner, ask one question: “What was one brave thing you did today?”

Then listen.

That’s where it begins.
