The Pickup Meltdown Wasn't About Me. It Was About Snacks.
Every day at school pickup, my 12-year-old would climb into the car already annoyed. Whatever I said was the wrong thing. It took me years to realize it wasn't about what I said. She was hungry. (Honestly, so was I.) Here's the simple snack swap that changed our afternoons, and she has no idea there's cottage cheese in it.
I'm a single mom to a 12-year-old, and for most of her life, parenting has looked a lot like managing meltdowns. Hers, yes. But also mine.
The one I remember best happens in the car. I'd pull up at school pickup, excited to see her, and she'd climb in already annoyed. "How was your day?" was met with an eye roll. "Do you want to stop anywhere?" was somehow the wrong question. Whatever I said, it was the wrong thing. By the time we got home, we were both frazzled, and I'd be wondering what I did wrong.
It took me a long time to realize it wasn't about what I said. She was hungry. She'd held it together all day at school, and by mid-afternoon her blood sugar had crashed. Truthfully, mine often had too, and I wasn't as patient as I wanted to be.
The missing piece I see again and again
As a health coach, I see this pattern all the time. When I work with clients on mood and energy, blood sugar is so often the missing piece, for them and for their kids. We look for answers in schedules, sleep, and parenting strategies (all of which matter), while the snack we grabbed at 3 p.m. quietly drives the whole afternoon.
Pairing protein with fiber slows things down, so energy stays steadier and patience lasts longer. Snacks are one of the easiest places to make that happen, and that's why I created my cottage cheese cookbook. I wanted a way to get more protein into us and our little ones, in food they'd actually eat.
Cottage cheese is the secret. Half a cup has roughly 12 to 14 grams of protein, and when it's baked into muffins and loaves, you can't taste it or see it. Two favourites from the book:
Cottage cheese muffins: soft, mild, and easy to grab on the way out the door
Cottage cheese banana loaf: a great way to use up the bananas that went spotty on the counter
And since it's pumpkin season, here's one to try now.

How pickup looks now
These days, I greet my daughter with a cottage cheese muffin or a slice of loaf when she gets in the car. The eye rolls have gotten a lot less frequent, and the ride home is a very different story.
And she has no idea there's cottage cheese in there.
You don't need a perfect routine. A protein-forward snack at the right time can be the difference between a good afternoon and a hard one. For us, it changed how we come home, and how I show up for her.
