You Can Love Being a Mom and Still Want More for Yourself
You can love your family fiercely and still want something that’s entirely your own. A mom of three teens, entrepreneur, and high-performance coach shares three simple ways to make space for your own dreams, without waiting for life to slow down.
Somewhere between raising three kids, building a business, managing a household, and trying to remember who needed to be where, I realized something. It’s really easy to spend years showing up for everyone else and slowly stop asking yourself what YOU want.
Not because motherhood isn’t incredible. It is. And not because we’re ungrateful for the lives we’ve built. But because somewhere along the way, our own dreams, goals, and identities can quietly move to the bottom of the list.
I’m a mom of three teenagers, a wife, an entrepreneur, and a high-performance coach. I’ve spent years navigating the beautiful, messy, exhausting, and rewarding seasons of motherhood while building businesses, pursuing big goals, and learning that taking care of myself isn’t something I earn after everyone else is taken care of. It’s something I need to prioritize along the way.
And here’s what I wish more mothers knew.
Wanting more doesn’t mean you’re unhappy with what you have. You can be deeply grateful for your family and still want to grow. You can love your children fiercely and still want a career, a business, a creative outlet, or an adventure that belongs entirely to you. You can be an incredible mother and still be a woman with dreams that have absolutely nothing to do with motherhood.
In my coaching work, I see women constantly waiting for the right time. When the kids are older. When life slows down. When there’s more money, more energy, more space.
But life doesn’t magically become less full. We have to create the space.
And sometimes that starts with three really simple things.
1. Ask yourself what you actually want.
Not what everyone needs from you. Not what you think you should want. What do YOU want in this season of your life?
2. Make your well-being part of the plan.
Move your body. Protect your energy. Prioritize your health. Find the things that make you feel like yourself again. They don’t have to be complicated to matter.
3. Find women who remind you of who you are.
Community is powerful. We weren’t meant to navigate motherhood, ambition, relationships, and personal growth alone. Some of the most meaningful moments in my life have come from sitting around a table with women willing to have real conversations.
As my own children grow older, I’m learning that motherhood isn’t about holding on to who we used to be. It’s also about giving ourselves permission to become who we’re meant to be next.
And maybe that’s the greatest example we can set for our children. That we never stop growing. That our dreams matter too. And that a full life isn’t necessarily about doing more. It’s about being intentional with what matters most.
Be where your feet are. But don’t forget you’re allowed to dream about where you’re going next.
